Jeff Sigurdson Harp Guitar A Modern Dyer Style with Old World Craftsmanship
|
Another beauty from Canadian luthier Jeff Sigurdson! Custom made for Harp Guitar Music, Jeff's instruments are a great value, and provide a high end, hand-built instrument at a mid-tier price. They also look and sound fantastic. Jeff builds a modern Dyer variant, incorporating a few contemporary changes of his own, both inside and out. Though Jeff's specialty is Flamenco guitars, he honed his steel string expertise during eight years at Larrivée Guitars, and it shows. I specifically requested that this be as simple as possible in the details, in order to keep the price at a minimum. Yet playability and tone are equal (perhaps even superior?) to the first, more expensive one earlier sold. Woods include a beautiful Lutz spruce top (the natural color of which is very hard to capture) combined with African Mahogany back and sides. The headplats are ebony, with some figuring in the uncarved bass head. Binding on both top and back is rosewood, with an additional b/w strip on the top. The silver "micro dot" fret markers and bridge inlays are a Larrivée trademark, a leftover influence of Jeff's time there. The flat neck dovetail (ala Charles Hoffman) simplifies this time-consuming joint, while more time is spent on the internal bracing (using all hide glue construction) and beautiful satin hand-rubbed catalyzed polyurethane varnish. Sub-bass nut posts are made of metal. To accommodate the most players, we again did a median 1-13/16" nut width. Adjustable truss rod included. No amplification, in order to keep the price as low as possible. Acoustic tone is stellar. Lovely crisp overtones and nice complex basses. One of the best hand-built harp guitar values currently available. - Gregg Miner, the "harp guitar pope" |
