If you haven't heard about these or seen one of the YouTube videos from some of the happy owners, then you're in for a treat. London ukulele and harp guitar builder Pete Howlett started designing this instrument a year and a half ago (see Gregg's Blogg). He then collaborated with the aNueNue Ukulele Company, who ultimately produced a trial run of 88 last year. Just 20 of those were allotted to the States and immediately sold out. I bought one myself at full retail, as rumors were that that would be it. There was subsequently such a clamor that they did one more batch of 80 - and this, they say is the last time. Of those, just 12 came to the States and the distributor immediately sold out. I managed to get the last one. Price increased slightly due to materials, they say. PLEASE NOTE: Photos on the left are stock photos from the manufacturer; Photos on the right are the actual instrument in stock. You can see a couple of bear claw figure marks in the spruce top in this one. Quality, workmanship and sound are all good (made in Vietnam, best of the Asian manufacturers). Ready to plug in and play - all you need to do is figure out those extra strings! (Harp guitar players will have no problem). Basses are nominally tuned CDEF, though you can of course tune to whatever you like. I ended up putting much heavier nylon basses on mine (plus Nylgut for the neck, which dramatically improved the sound, IMHO). C'mon - it's a baby Dyer, you know you want it! (P.S. 2 top harp guitarists now own one, and come Fall, folks will be clamoring for these, mark my words.) - Gregg Miner, the "harp guitar pope" |
