Chris Knutsen: From Harp Guitars to the New Hawaiian Family by George T. Noe & Daniel Most

190 pages, paper

In Stock

The ground-breaking book begins with Knutsen's life in the 1890s in Port Townsend at about the time of his harp guitar patent applications and follows his life and the development of his instruments in Port Townsend, Tacoma, Seattle and Los Angeles, and his influence on other luthiers, until his death in Los Angeles in 1930.  Chris Knutsen has been possibly the most unappreciated luthier of his era.  His contributions to, and influence on, the development of the Hawaiian steel guitar, in particular, have been largely overshadowed by those who came after him, both then and now.   He was the first mainland luthier to build instruments specifically designed to be played in the style used and taught by Hawaiian musicians.

The Larsons' Creations: Guitars & Mandolins - Centennial Edition by Robert Carl Hartman

Softcover, 280 pages, with CD

In Stock

Book with CD.  An account of two brothers who were premier producers of stringed instruments in the early part of this century.  Swedish immigrants Carl and August Larson made instruments under the brand names of Maurer, Prairie State, Euphonon, W.J. Dyer & Bro., Wm. C. Stahl, WLS, and their own name, and their highly collectible creations are considered today to be some of the finest ever made.  Lovingly researched and written by Robert Hartman, the grandson of Carl Larson, this updated edition contains a wealth of information: the stories behind each brand name, serial numbers, construction techniques, lots more; reprints of classic advertisements and catalogs, historical photos, tons of photos of guitars, mandolins, ukuleles and harp guitars (many more spectacular instruments than in the previous edition), plus 32 pages of full-color photos. The 31 track CD features 11 different artists, including Muriel Anderson, Stephen Bennett, Stacy Hobbs, Jim Kanas and Gregg Miner performing on harp guitars, plus a mandolin orchestra playing Larsons instruments and a special unreleased track of Jimi Hendrix playing a Stahl guitar!

Edited by Vjera Katalinić – Sanja Majer-Bobetko

400+ pages, 7 x 9-1/2", paper

Temporarily Out of Stock - expected arrival date unknown

Presents the life, times and music of Ivan Padovec - no stranger to Early Romantic guitar players and scholars, but little known (until now) to the rest of us.  Articles are in Croatian with summaries in English, and one in English with summary in Croatian.  Of particular interest to harp guitar researchers and historical guitar scholars is Alex Timmerman's exhaustive English chapter titled "Guitars with Extra Bass Strings. Johann Georg Stauffer, His Son Johann Anton Stauffer and Their Contemporaries."  In his 50 pages plus 41 pages of photographs (the majority in full color) he provides a remarkable investigation into European bass-guitars (harp guitars).
