The Harp Guitar
Music gig bag is made exclusively for
us by the popular Colorado Case Company,
and is designed to accommodate the Dyer harp guitar, Dyer copies and
knock-offs of similar size and shape, the Duane Noble harp guitar, most
Knutsen harp guitars, and many other similarly-sized vintage and modern
instruments (not recommended for smaller instruments like the Sedgwick,
nor will it fit anything much larger than a Dyer).

The Harp Guitar
Music "Clamshell" Flight Case is made specially for
us by CaseXtreme of San Diego,
California, and is designed to be as small and light-weight as
possible. It is intended for the same harp guitars listed above,
with or without the HGM gig bag. If your instrument
is noticeably longer or wider than the Dyer's 42" length (end pin
to tip of headstock) and ~16" width, this case is not recommended
(See our Gator Case option instead). |
|
Now with "a skosh more room"!
Dimensions (see images below for fit):
Outer: ~ 48" x 21-1/2" x
9-1/2" (buckles and handles extra)
Inner: ~ 46-1/2" x 20-1/4" x 8"
Factory production of
the CaseXtreme has ceased. They are now made by hand, and
price has dramatically increased. After much searching, I
feel that these are still one of the most affordable cases out
there, and do the job well. Meaning, they protect the
instrument.
Added Bonus #1: They are MUCH lighter than standard
flight cases (Apparently, James Taylor traded in 3 Caltons for
3 of these simply for traveling ease).
Added Bonus #2: The simple plastic outer shell disguises
the fact that you have a several thousand dollar instrument
inside. Any airport thieves will be targeting the fancy
Calton or other high-end flight case next to it.
Since they are now made
by hand, I made a couple of changes, as did the manufacturer:
Improvement #1: They are 1" longer and 1"
wider than the previous version. This
provides a better, perfect fit of the foam C-clamps around all
sides of a Dyer (or similar instrument) in the Harp Guitar Music gig
bag. So no foam clamps need to be cut down or forced in, and
the instrument has an extra half inch protection all the way
around. It will even contain a Gibson harp guitar in an
emergency! SEE BELOW for examples.
Improvement #2: The handles are a softer, stretchable
rubber for more comfort.
Improvement #3: All pieces are glued together with
industrial contact cement, as is the corner pocket. These
should be able to take even more of a beating from the airlines.

| How to fit an
instrument: Recommended C-clamp
placement for a standard Dyer. A loose instrument could be
held in place as shown (Stephen Bennett has flown with this very
set-up). However, all clamps must be tight, so extra foam
pieces must be rubber-banded together to firmly cushion the
instrument from above, below and against all side walls.
Otherwise, shifting may occur. When the lid is closed, this
further locks the pieces in place. No muss, no fuss; the
instrument simply "floats" in the box. Note that the Dyer is
slightly angled to put the protruding arm more in plane with the
body. |
Old Stock
Flight Case |
| The above arrangement works fine,
but is not
necessarily recommended. The padded HGM gig bag further
protects the instrument from the elements and perfectly fills the
spaces in the C-clamps. The tighter the fit, the better (you
must ensure that the clamps are snug and will not move from
their position).
Note how I have deliberately
stuffed the case so tightly that the sides ends are bulging - this
is OK; the sides will all close in adequately when the lid is
closed. The more snug, the better!

New Stock Flight Case
|
My new, slightly larger case will
now just fit a loose Gibson. I would consider this
only as a one-time shipping option, but not for repeated air travel. C-clamps
would be cut down and/or other foam pieces would be used to
float the instrument. There is 1" on either side of
the lower bouts, and ~ 3/4" at either end (not counting end
pin, which would best be removed). Other larger, wider or
longer harp guitars may also fit. For safer fit for large
instruments, see the new Gator Case
option.
Note: Special Orders for any-sized harp
guitar can be accommodated, though price may be significantly
higher. |

|
If you're looking for a sleek and sexy
case, this is not it. This is no-frills practicality - meant to be
as lightweight but indestructible as possible.
(please note that Harp Guitar Music makes no guarantee for your
instrument's safety)
| How
indestructible? Check out the videos at right (but try to
resist the temptation to jump up and down on your Dyer).
The tough, corrugated plastic will flex some, and may get
scuffed and beat up by the airlines, but should protect the
instrument floating inside for years to come. 1-year
warranty on materials and manufacturing. Includes 6 C-pads, spacer pads,
shoulder strap and detachable wheels. Instructional videos
at right demonstrate easy use of the components.
